Thinking Thoughts and Feeling FeelingsSocial learning involves recognizing our thoughts and feelings. In exploring this concept, we make abstract concepts more connected to what they know and understand already such as their body parts. They know their feet are for walking, hands are for touching, etc.
Whole Body ListeningChildren in the school setting start to learn to have focused attention. Listening involves more than just hearing. In order to listen, we actually learn to turn towards the speaker, look at the speaker, think about what the speaker is saying and keep our body still. We call this whole body listening.

Group PlanWhen children enter school, they begin to learn as a group. In Social Thinking, we call this a group plan. Talking about a group plan helps them realize they are part of a group and there are expected behaviors that help the group get along.
Size of the ProblemSometimes we react to what happens in an unexpected way. Teaching children to understand that problems come in all sizes helps them recognize that reactions should match the size of the problem. It is unexpected to have huge reactions to a little problem or no reaction to a huge problem.
